I believe "Incendies" means "raging fires."  Fits.  And it's better not to know ahead of time what the plot is entirely about...I'd avoid the trailer and only skem through reviews before seeing.  I watched the trailer AFTERWARDS and was really, REALLY glad I hadn't seen it first.  The trailer gave away at least one surprise that you shouldn't know ahead of time.

Nawal Marwan has just died.  She leaves her twin children each a letter, Jeanne is to deliver her letter to her father and Simon is to deliver his to their brother. This is quite shocking and unbelievable, because they've always been told that their father was dead and they've never heard of any brother.  We accompany Jeanne as she travels from Canada to the mideast, where she begins to search for clues.  The film keeps flashing back to the past to Nawal and lets her, in this way, tell her story.  Telling any more would ruin it.

This was one excellent movie.  Horrifying. Sad.  Mesmerizing. What storytelling...going back in forth in time from mother to daughter and son.....a perfect weaving. A weaving with layers.

There's a very intersting review, particularly because it discusses the absence of an actual locale for the mideastern part of the story.  Apparently it was left ambiguous for a reason.  However, this article in The Yuppie Activist is quite interesting.  Also is one written by Chris Knipp on his blog.There are probably loads more, but these are the ones I found when looking for the locale of the movie.  And ofcourse there's always the IMBd review.

Shame on me.  For the first time I've gotten behind on my blog.  Two unexpected trips to the east coast and back, nine missed days of school (thank goodness for bereavement leave), a road trip during Spring break to Colorado, six or seven movies and four or five audio books later I'm overwhelmed.  Where do I start? I finally decided this morning that I attack them one at a time, new stuff first, going backwards when I have time.  It's the only way to go, or it'll be bye bye blog and I love blogging too much to let that happen!

24. School Days - Robert B. Parker

Classic Spenser.  He said.  She said.  a little philosophical thinking, a little gourmet "throwing together" of a meal, a lot of Pearl and very little of Susan in this one.

17 year-old Jared Clark and a friend have gone into their private high school in Dowling, Massachusetts on a killing spree.  Jared's wealthy socialite grandmother hires Spenser to prove his innocence.  So Spenser charges in, in his usual style, to entertain us and to make us think.  I love the way that Parker could always piece together a story!

Spenser is in and out of the prison, speaking to the two boys, back and forth to Dowlling to probe the head of school, the school psychologist, some of the townies and some of the private school peers of the boys. Included are local and Boston gangs that run drugs and guns and an assortment of the usual interesting characters that Spenser either scorns or likes a lot.

Good stuff.  Went fast. 

23. Last Witness - Jilliane Hoffman

The second intense serial killer book in a row, Last Witness is about C. J. Townsend, a Miami assistant state attorney and her boyfriend/fiance, Dominic Falconetti, who is the head of a task force for Maimi's newest serial killer - this time, one that kills cops in a particularly grizzly, bloody manner. However, it becomes more intricate for C.J. when she discovers that these killings are all related to her biggest - and most notorious - case, that of  "Cupid.."  That madman is on death row, but C.J. has some secrets about that case, relating to her own rape many years before, that is threatening to send her off the deep end.

I've never been too fond of Miami settings (although Dexter has begun to grow on me a bit), and this Miami depiction wasn't to enticing, either.  But the story was interesting, intricate, somewhat predictable, and went very quickly.

"Please Write: Don't Phone" - Robert Watson

I spent a lot of time yesterday - hours, actually - browsing through the selection of "crafty" books at Barnes and Noble.  Some were really cool!  I love one called Good Mail Day (Hinchcliff/Wheeler) that included this poem, which I really like a lot.

Please Write:  Don't Phone

While there is mail there is hope.
After we have hung up I can't recall
Your words, and  your voice sounds strange
Whether from distance, a bad cold, deceit
I don't know.  When you call I'm asleep
Or bathing or my mouth is full of toast.
I can't think of what to say.

Favorite Words: Parched

Here's another word that delights me.  My oldest grandchild started talking early and has had an incredible vocabulary ever since she started.  But when a three year old tells you that she's parched, it stays with you.  It's been one of my very favorite words ever since.  Just found it again today in a poem from Room Enough for Love, by Ralph Fletcher:

Lost

We lay once beneath the clouds
but now I've lost the sky.

Youn handed me an ice-cold drink
and now my throat stays parched.

I ran my fingers through your hair
which cost mey sense of touch.

With you I watched my first sunrise --
that's how I lost the sun.

Who Stole Mona Lisa? - Ruthie Knapp

This story is told by the famous painting, the Mona Lisa, by Leonardo daVinci.  She begins in the Louvre, where she's hung for many years...but then she goes back to her beginnings.  She tells of daVinci painting her and tells about about Lisa Gheradini, who was the model for the painting.  She tells of the different palaces where she hung and how Napoleon, the last French ruler to "own" her gave her to the Louvre Museum in Paris.

Then the story changes.  She tells of the man who stole her from the wall, and what happened to her in the two years (1911 on) that she was lost to the world. 

So interesting!  I'd  love to do a one or two day lesson about daVinci, his inventions, the Mona Lisa, and various other cool things that are attributed to his genius.

There's an Author's Note that gives more information.  The illustrations are wonderful, folky, with a number of great borders.

I saw the trailer for this and it  looked funny, reminded me of ET.  Well, I think it was supposed to!  I fell in love with Paul.  His persona, his humor, his voice (go, Seth Rogen!), his demeanor.  It was a fun story with lots of humor and all sorts of references to other movies.  You'd probably have to watch it a second time to catch them all.

Two very nice guys from England have made their first trip across the pond to attend Comicon in San Diego and take a road trip to see places where UFOs have been sighted across the southwest.  They've rented an RV and can't believe their lifelong dream has come true.  And of course, as comedic movies go, they run from one situation to another.  But it's when they literally crash into Paul that their real adventure begins.  They add a one-eyed God-fearing beauty to their entourage.  We also watch  a solemn FBI agent (Jason Bateman, who never cracks a smile...how can he do that?), two bumbling agents, and their female boss who are close on Paul's tail. 

SNL players left and right, Jane Lynch (!), Sigourney Weaver, Blythe Danner, Steven Spielberg....surprise after delightful surprise.  This was an especially fun movie.  And I really do have a crush on Paul...

The steps of the Passover Seder are described and illustrated.  Each page begins "NOW" and describes the cleaning, the preparation, the symbols.  But as the candles are lit, we get to open up the right hand page to a lovely painting of the "THEN."  Each of the sections of the Seder plate are described, every part of this special passover meal -- right down to opening the door for Elijah and finding Afikamen.  It's beautifully told and the folky paintings are incredibly delightful.

Before I taught at a Jewish day school I knew nothing - NOTHING - about Jewish holidays.  I've attended three Seders now, which helped me understand this book even more.  But if a child knows nothing about Passover, this might not be enough.  It is for Jewish children to read and enjoy.  It's really lovely.
