Movie - A Man Called Otto

PG-13 (2:06)
Wide 1/12/23
Viewed date at 2/21/23 at South Point Casino Cinema with Fran
IMBd: 7.6/10
RT Critic:  69  Audience:  97
Critic's Consensus:  Check all cynicism at the door and allow A Man Called Otto to tug at your heartstrings with its tried-and-true tune -- it just might sing.
Cag:  5/Loved it, unexpectedly
based on the book A Man Called Ove by (which I didn't read)

Tom Hanks

My comments:  Otto can't live his life without his beloved wife, so decides to end it all, with hilarious consequences.  When the new neighbors across the street, a young transgender guy who loved Otto's teacher/wife, and a stray cat all come into his life at once during a snowy Pittsburg winter, Otto's grumpy, unhappy life changes. Very well done movie...and of course, Tom Hanks plays it perfectly.  His own son is cast as the younger Otto, which I personally think is quite cool.

RT/ IMDb Summary:  Based on the comical and moving New York Times bestseller, A Man Called Otto tells the story of Otto Anderson (Tom Hanks), a grumpy widower whose only joy comes from criticizing and judging his exasperated neighbors. When a lively young family moves in next door, he meets his match in quick-witted and very pregnant Marisol, leading to an unexpected friendship that will turn his world upside-down.

Movie - Marlowe

R (1:49)
Wide 2/15/2023
Viewed 2/19/23 at South Point Casino Cinema, Las Vegas with Fran
IMBd: 5.8/10
RT Critic: 23   Audience:  37
Critic's Consensus:  Liam Neeson isn't necessarily a bad fit for the classic character, but Marlowe fails to make a case for itself as either a worthwhile franchise extension or a fun mystery in its own right
Cag:  4 Liked it quite well

Liam Neeson, Diane Kruger, Jessica Lange

My comments:  Of the three movies I saw this week with Fran, I liked this the least....though I still found it thoroughly entertaining.  Love Liam Neeson.  Loved the 30s setting and all the fancy sets and costumes.
RT Summary:  MARLOWE, a gripping noir crime thriller set in late 1930’s Bay City, centers around a brooding, down on his luck detective; Philip Marlowe, played by Liam Neeson, who is hired to find the ex-lover of a glamorous heiress (Diane Kruger), daughter of a well-known movie star (Jessica Lange). The disappearance is the first twist in a series of bewildering events, and soon Marlowe is embroiled in a deadly investigation and web of lies that he’s determined to bring to light.

Movie - Missing

PG-13 (1:51)
Wide 1/20/23
Viewed 2/18/23 at South Point Casino Cinema, Las Vegas with Fran
IMBd: 7.3/10
RT Critic: 87  Audience:  90
Critic's Consensus:  Missing can strain credulity in its efforts to keep the audience guessing, but a fast pace and relatable fears keep this twisty techno-thriller from completely losing its way.
Cag:  4.5  Liked it a lot

Actors: no one I knew, all good

My comments:  I loved the premise of this movie, all the sleuthing was done using the internet and with a hired jack-of-all trades in Columbia who only knew a little English, and their discussions were using facetime.  Fast and furious internet abilities, much of the movie was watching the computer screen!

RTSummary:  When her mother (Nia Long) disappears while on vacation in Colombia with her new boyfriend, June's (Storm Reid) search for answers is hindered by international red tape. Stuck thousands of miles away in Los Angeles, June creatively uses all the latest technology at her fingertips to try and find her before it's too late. But as she digs deeper, her digital sleuthing raises more questions than answers... and when June unravels secrets about her mom, she discovers that she never really knew her at all.

Lots of Old Movie Reviews to Clear My iPhone!

 3/24/19  Capernaum (6)
This was one incredible movie.  So many pictures I can't get out of my head after seeing it - the birds-eye-view of Beirut, tall buildings with tire-covered roofs going on for miles and miles.  Slums.  Poverty, unimaginable poverty.  Refugees from Syria and Ethiopia who end up here.  Real eye-opening, almost documentary-type information.  Directed by a female.  Gritty.  The young man who played Zail, whose real name was also Zail, was truly amazing.  Wow.  Got to give it a 6.

6/9/19 ??  Wonder Park (2.5)
With Tristan.  Another one of those cute, animated stupid movies the kids seem to enjoy.  Not me.  When I asked Tristan what he would rate it, one being not very good at all and five being the best, he said he would rate it a 4......  2.5 for me.

5/3/2019 Long Shot (4)
It's fun to see a funny, feel-good movie once in awhile, and there haven't been many appearing lately.  I totally enjoyed the story - a female Secretary of State and a male journalist, very strong in their convictions (similar to mine, which is a plus) as they fall in love.  It was cleverly pulled together without either one of them having to let go of too much.  The 10-minute ending/happily ever after/aftermath was just wonderful to see.  I'm so glad there was an ending that actually worked! Yep, I do indeed like HEA.  Both main actors were wonderful, Seth Rogen was certainly Seth Rogen-y, and Charlene Therizon showed more than I've seen before.  Pretty cool.

4/28/19  After (4)
Mechanicsburg on the Carlisle Pike with Ella on a Sunday afternoon after a picnic in the car.  This was a very sweet teenage romantic flick without a sad ending...just a feel good movie with some decent acting and storytelling.  No complaints from me here!  Ella rated it a 5.5.  I'll go for a 4.

6/9/19  Dark Phoenix (3)
Well, stupid me.  I did not realize that this was an X-Men movie.  Even though I had no background, I was able to follow it pretty well.  It was interesting until it came to the end scenes that were just those crazy (boring) battle scenes that make me roll my eyes.  Lots of big names in this one, but for the life of me I couldn't warm to the main character, Jean Grey.  Didn't care what happened to her, which unfortunately was exactly what the entire movie was about.   Oh well, an early summer rainy Monday evening entertainment.

6/21/19  Pets II  (4)
I took the kids, a really cute movie, very humorous, very much better than most of the animated movies I see - don't like many of them.  I've got to give this one a two thumbs up.  Really loved the humor.

6/30/19  The Dead Don't Die  (4)
2 o'clock at the Majestic in Gettysburg.  Note: It's so much fun going to this theater!   What a funny, ridiculous, creepy, random movie.  I guffawed through all the creepiness and violence of killing the poor zombies, I hate to admit.  Bill Murray and Adam Driver played off each other so perfectly, I loved them.  And to throw in the OMG-what's-this-all-about funeral director was so random and bizarre and added to the WTF format.  The entire movie was a  WTF!!!  It was also really fun to watch.

8/11/19  Dora  (2.5)
With the kids on a Sunday afternoon.  Kids really enjoyed it, I expected more.  There were some really cute touches, heralding back to the TV series, but otherwise it was just a little too silly/stupid.  I've been looking forward to it, so was disappointed.

8/17/19  Where'd You Go Bernadette (4)
Camp Hill.  The movie certainly kept the integrity of the book, not changing information but giving it at different times and different ways, which was kind of fun because it kept you on your toes.  I loved the book and very much enjoyed the movie.  It was good, but not great.

8/29/19  Peanut Butter Falcon (5)
Saw at Camp Hill, but it's not being shown in a lot of the major theaters.
Clever and very different story of a Down Syndrome young man, a down-and-out Outer Banks fisherman, and a young woman whose mission in life seems to be to help others.  Zach, also the real name of the actor who plays the part, is 20-years old, his family has apparently abandoned him, and the state has placed him in an old folk's retirement home so he can be "watched over."  He wants to get out and live his life.  So one night he sneaks out (soaping his body to wriggle between barely opened bars on his window) and all he has as he runs away are his tightie whities.  He hides and falls asleep in a decrepit fishing boat under a tarp, and that's how he meets Tyler.  The two go on the run together and it's pretty darn heartwarming how they make friends and fulfill promises.  It was a wonderful movie...good guys and bad guys, people caring about other people, scraping by by the seat of your pants.  Definitely liked this one a lot. Shia LaBeouf and Dakota Johnson starred, Shia LaBeouf particularly did a really good job.

9/14/19  The Goldfinch (5)
I think this was a wonderful adaptation of the book, all the same information and facts but told in a bit of a different way.  Instead of telling the story this happened, then this happened, then this, and this is how it ends.....they started near the end and told much of the story in flashbacks.  I think it was quite cleverly done, actually.  Loved the actors.  I wonder what people who have never read the book think.  I've read so many books that I only remember the general gist of most of them, but nothing specific.  For some reason I didn't forget most of this story, and it's been years since I listened to it on audio.  I wonder why that is.  Other than it being particularly long - I guess it had to be - I really liked it.  Well done.  It cracks me up that the reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes only gave it a 25%!  I'll have to go read why, but it's probably all technical stuff that I could care less about.

12/13/19 Jumanji: The Next Level (3.5)
With Laura, Tristan and friend, Ella and friend.  Funny, funny, funny and clever.  Great actors taking on the affectations of others extremely well!

1/23/20  Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (3.5)
The first 45 minutes were so incredibly boring that I wanted to leave and almost did.  It picked up after that.  It had the requisite flying crazily through the galaxy, saber sword fights, and running and jumping around.  Carrie Fisher was in quite a bit of it, they used outtakes from the previous movies of her face and speech, working it into the dialogue.  Interesting.  I DO love Adam Driver!

2/13/20  Downhill (2, and that's stretching it)
A complete waste of time.  Over-acting.  Looks like it should be a comedy with two major comedians and it wasn't a comedy at all, just a sad story with of lot of pissing me off.  I can't believed it actually made it to the big screen.  And it opened on Valentine's Day - absolutely ridiculous.  This is so not a Valentine's Day movie!  When is a decent movie going to arrive?

2/25/20  Sonic the Hedgehog (3.5)
Saw with Tristan, of course.  Surprisingly, a really fun movie!  Didn't realize James Marsden or Jim Carrey were in it, so that made it an added treat.

Movie - Spiderman: No Way Home

PG-13 (2:28)
Wide release 12/17/2021
Viewed Monday 1/10/22 (after karate) with T at the Carlisle Theater
RT Critic: 93   Audience:  98
Critic's Consensus:  A bigger, bolder Spider-Man sequel, No Way Home expands the franchise's scope and stakes without losing sight of its humor and heart.
Cag:  4/Liked it a lot
Directed by Jon Watts
Studio: Columbia Pictures
Marvel

Tom Holland, Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jamie Foxx, Marisa Tomei, Willem Defoe, Alfred Molina, Andrew Garfield, Tobey Maguire

My comments:  First thoughts?  It was really long.  There were more fighting scenes than I personally like, but that's what draws a lot of people to it, I guess, especially some of the kids and young men.  I loved the comedy.  I loved the characters, especially Dr. Strange.   And I loved, loved, loved the way they brought back Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire (and since it was a total surprise to me, an exceptional addition!)  Every scene with the three Spidermen was exceptional.  And I've got to say that Tom Holland was just wonderful in the role.
A huge delight was to be sitting next to Tristan and watch his enjoyment of the movie!  It's the first one we've seen together since the pandemic started and that was a real joy, since we used to go frequently before.
Note:  Andrew Garfield is now 38 years old, and Tobey Maguire is 46!  Tom Holland is a cutesy 25.

RT/ IMDb Summary:  For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero's identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. When he enlists Doctor Strange's help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who've ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse.

Directed by Danis Tanovic
Good Films Collective, K. JAM Media
Based on the book by Paterson

Jeffrey Dean Morgan

My comments:  Set in London, Stockholm, and Helsinki with brief encounters in Hamburg, Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris....very grizzly piece which left me feeling a little bereft, but which took my mind away from my own troubles for a bit.  Jeffrey Dean Morgan is great...

RT/ IMDb Summary:  A New York detective investigates the death of his daughter, who was murdered while on her honeymoon in London, the victim of an apparent serial killer.

Movie - Knives Out

PG-13 (2:10)
Wide release 11/27/2019
Viewed 1/4/2020 in Carlisle, but myself
IMBd: 8.1/10
RT Critic: 97   Audience: 92
Critic's Consensus:  Knives Out sharpens old murder-mystery tropes with a keenly assembled suspense outing that makes brilliant use of writer-director Rian Johnson's stellar ensemble.
Cag:  4/Liked it
Directed by Rian Johnson
Lionsgate

Jamie Lee Curtis, Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Don Johnson, Toni Collette,

My comments:  Although the pace of the movie was a little plodding, the story was excellent.  Daniel Craig was nothing special, but the girl who played the lead protagonist was not only gorgeous but was really fun to watch.  The murder wasn't as convoluted as I had expected it to be, and there was a great deal of very subtle humor which I enjoyed a lot.  Chris Evans is such a doll!

RT/ IMDb Summary:  Acclaimed writer and director Rian Johnson (Brick, Looper, Star Wars: The Last Jedi) pays tribute to mystery mastermind Agatha Christie in KNIVES OUT, a fun, modern-day murder mystery where everyone is a suspect. When renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) is found dead at his estate just after his 85th birthday, the inquisitive and debonair Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is mysteriously enlisted to investigate. From Harlan's dysfunctional family to his devoted staff, Blanc sifts through a web of red herrings and self-serving lies to uncover the truth behind Harlan's untimely death. With an all-star ensemble cast including Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette, Don Johnson, Michael Shannon, LaKeith Stanfield, Katherine Langford and Jaeden Martell, KNIVES OUT is a witty and stylish whodunit guaranteed to keep audiences guessing until the very end.

My comments:  Unfortunately, this is one of the movies I saw in the spring that I didn't review right away, so forgot my initial reaction other than I liked it a lot, but not hugely.....

RT Summary:  Curmudgeonly widower Nat Dayan (Tony award-winning actor Jonathan Pryce, currently in HBO's "Game of Thrones") clings to his way of life as a Kosher bakery shop owner in London's East End. Understaffed, Nat reluctantly enlists the help of teenager Ayyash (Jerome Holder), who has a secret side gig selling marijuana to help his immigrant mother make ends meet. When Ayyash accidentally drops his stash into the mixing dough, the challah starts flying off the shelves and an unlikely friendship forms between the old Jewish baker and his young Muslim apprentice. DOUGH is a warmhearted and humorous story about overcoming prejudice and finding redemption in unexpected places.
