"Chef for a Day" at Ronald McDonald House

A couple of Sundays ago, three of my colleagues met me at the Tucson Ronald McDonald house to prepare the Sunday evening meal for the people staying there.  There were eight families, averaging four people per family (which I understand is the norm.)  The kitchen is huge - it has two identical sides, each side with a dishwasher, two sinks, two stoves, a multitude of refrigerators, and cupboards filled with every tool and spice that we might ever need.

The facility is beautiful, warm, and friendly.  The volunteers who were staffing the area were extremely kind...and so thankful to us.  And we had fun.  We did a good did and had a good time doing so.

What did we prepare?  We were told that many of the meals provided are spaghetti and/or tacos.  We decided to have two different casseroles - one being vegetarian; two desserts; homemade rolls; and a big tossed salad.  Everything has to be prepared on site. It took the four of us about two hours to unload, get our bearings, and prepare the meal for 30.

My comments:  This is a really difficult book to rate.  It was read beautifully by Joshilyn Jackson, one of the wonderful things about the book.  The characters were over-the-top quirky - I love quirky but are these characters just a little too-too far....every single one of them? Maxon, the husband, is awesome and believable; utterly and wonderfully autistic, I wanted more of him. Emma, the mother, sickening so quickly and refusing to die, having played such a huge part in teaching Maxon how to fit into a world that was different - and not so understanding of - a person like him.   But this is Sunny's story, and Sunny is the one I had the most difficulty with. One minute I though I had her pegged, but the next...?  The story is pretty cool - fanciful and unbelievable (as well as believable) and exotic and different and funny, too. Whew!  I guess I really liked almost all of it.

My comments:  Whew!  So what do I think about this book?  Setting, plot, characters, let's see.  Plot, though horribly grizzly, was well conceived and written in an interesting way; jumping back and forth on itself as memories from Kit's kidnapped years keep appearing. There are really three mysteries being examined - current abductions, Kit's abduction, and the mysterious identity and intentions of John Bishop. The setting flips between the American northwest and the San Diego area. The only character I couldn't totally get into was that of the protagonist!  She was so cockily sure of herself, but many of her actions were immature and poorly thought-out.  I felt no sexual pull at all between Kit and Bishop, so when it began straying in that direction, I was disconcerted.  I want to know more information about her "brother", James, and look forward to another book that might answer many of the questions that Kit ... and I ... have about Bishop.

My comments:  There are some great poems in here (J. Patrick Lewis, Carl Sandburg, David Harrison, Rebecca Kai Dotlich, Jane Yolen, Kristine O'Connell George, and Marilyn Singer to name a few) - but it's a very short selection.  The gorgeous, brilliantly-colored illustrations set them all off perfectly.

1st sentence/s:  "They wait for the tide and set out at first light.   It has rained all night and in the morning the ground is seething gently, a mist rising up to join the overhanging clouds."

My comments:  I'm quite excited to have found a new mystery series, and it seems to have pulled me right in! Ruth Galloway, in her late thirties, short and overweight (12 1/2 stone, but I'm not at all sure how much that is) lives by herself with her cats in a small cottage in the salt marshes near Norfolk, England.  I can't quite picture this salt marsh, where people who are walking along can get swallowed up and die/drown, or easily get pulled out to sea.  I really want to see this place!  I think I've actually been quite close, taking the train from Cambridge to Norwich a few years ago - while looking for Norfolk on a map of Britain, it seemed quite close.  Ruth's relationship with Inspector Harry Nelson was really interesting, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it's going to develop in later books.  Their working relationship and respect for each other is strong, but the personal relationship that's begun certainly has some far-reaching possibilities. Although resolution of the mystery was, indeed, pretty easy to figure out, I'm expecting some good things from books-to-come in this series.  This was just setting them up!

My comments:  Yes, I went to see it on opening day.  And yes, I liked it.  I was really curious to see how they'd handle all the x-rated scenes from the book - which was a good half of it - in an R-rated movie. In my very own, personal opinion, the movie worked really well.  Sure, there were things from the book that were missing, but the sex scenes were really well done and titillating enough to make me giggle. The book was pretty poorly written, but the movie was quite well done.  Yes, others disagree with me, but it really worked for me and I enjoyed it.  The leads were terrific.  However, other than perhaps Marcia Gay Harden as Christian's mom and definitely Max Martini as Taylor, I didn't like any of the people cast as the supporting actors.  None of them worked for me. So, all in all, the movie was ten times better than the book, but I'm glad I read the book first.

RT Summary:E.L. James' kinky best-seller gets the big screen treatment with this Universal Pictures/Focus Features co-production. The steamy tale details a masochistic relationship between a college student and a businessman, whose desires for extreme intimacy pen from secrets in his past.

     Badger and Raccoon see things n black and white.  They are always sure they are right.  Little gray Koala isn't sure about many things.  She asks lots of questions.
     What a clever book - and it has all sorts of atrributes!  Two pages of "graphic novel."  The appearance of a LIBRARY and BOOKS!  Two supposed friends who are subtle bullies.  The excitement of watching plants (flowers! grow from seeds with just a tiny bit of nurturing.  SO much to take in - and all of it was wonderful.

My comments:  Yes, Cotillard did a superb job in this role.  The story was quite interesting, too.  But it was slow.  Really, really slow.  Too slow.  I loved listening to the French.  There really wasn't a whole lot of talking, so I could follow much of the conversation.

RT Summary:  Sandra (Cotillard) has just been released from the hospital to find that she no longer has a job. According to management, the only way Sandra can hope to regain her position at the factory is to convince her co-workers to sacrifice their much-needed yearly bonuses. Now, over the course of one weekend, Sandra must confront each co-worker individually in order to win a majority of their votes before time runs out. With TWO DAYS, ONE NIGHT, the Dardennes have turned a relevant social inquiry into a powerful statement on community solidarity, once again delivering a film that is simple on the surface but alive with both compassion and wisdom.

My comments:  I hate reviewing a book when I don't like it, but I guess I've got to be honest.  I didn't like this story - or the storytelling - at all.  It was all tell, no show.  It was like the author made an outline and then filled in a few nouns and verbs.  No character development and very little plot development....nothing surprising or disconcerting, and no reason to read through until the end.  Yuck.

My comments:  Yuck.  I love a good sci-fi, but this sure wasn't a good one.  Lots of whizzing around in outer space, careening this way and that, explosions, light shows...but all without being able to tell what was going on, lots of plot "stuff" you had to guess at...but lots and lots and LOTS of really great ears.  Yup, ears.  All the space aliens had different weird ears, and I loved 'em all!

RT Summary: From the streets of Chicago to the far-flung galaxies whirling through space, "Jupiter Ascending" tells the story of Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis), who was born under a night sky, with signs predicting she was destined for great things. My comments:  This book was so much fun to listen to!  Suzy Jackson did a terrific job as a reader, and although her voice for Emily was sweet and young, when she became Frank (especially) she added just enough male inflection to make it sound masculine and believable.  The story itself was great, watching a timid girl come into her own.  Such a nice change from the grizzlier YAs I've read recently.  And this book was totally and wonderfully real.  I think I was a lot like Emily when I was 17.....  So why not a five?  The last few chapters dragged a bit, at least compared to the rest of the book.
