I picked this card because you asked for old ladies, but age is relative.  You might not think these women are old.  I live in SE VA, near the border with NC.  We have great beaches in VA Beach and on the Outer Banks of NC (OBX).  I have a vegetable garden and a pet cat.  I also like to read books. 2039.  Greetings from Vancouver, British Columbia
My first job was as a page in the city library.  I absolutely loved it!  I got to decorate the children's reading area, look at neat books as I put them away, and my friends could always visit.  I hope that you like this card.  Happy Spring!

Postcards from Brunei

And where, exactly, is Brunei?

1125.  Brunei
Hi Chris, I'm hoping probiscus monkeys hanging out on a tree branch, looking down as if they're posing for a "candid" shot is quirky enough!
Brunei is 70% covered with rainforest.  Our population is small - around 400,000, and that's including foreigners.  If you're a fan of mosquitoes, please do come to Brunei!  Take care, Nisa Said

7. Punishment by Scott Holliday

Det. John Barnes #1

2018, Thomas & Mercer
240 pgs.
Adult SciFi Mystery - Police Procedural
Finished 1-12-18
Goodreads rating:  3.85 - 1101 ratings
My rating:  4
Setting: Detroit in the future

First line/s:  "Detroit homicide detective John Barnes sat in an unmarked sedan, squeezing a fifth of bourbon by the neck."

My comments:  Awesome cover.  Couldn't put it down.  It's dark and gruesome and fascinating.  The protagonist, John Barnes, doesn't care about his own existence because of the guild he feels about his brother's death , many years before.  So he puts himself through all sorts of excruciating physical and mental pain - no, anguish - in his job as a police officer in this futuristic US.  This is the second SYfyI have read in the last week and I've never really been into sci-fi.  This one was good.  I loved and hated the way it was all wrapped up...

GoodReads synopsis: Detroit-based homicide detective John Barnes has seen it all—literally. Thanks to a technologically advanced machine, detectives have access to the memories of the living, the dying, and the recently dead. But extracting victims’ experiences firsthand and personally reliving everything up to the final, brutal moments of their lives—the sights, the sounds, the scents, the pain—is also the punishment reserved for the criminals themselves.
Barnes has had enough. Enough of the memories that aren’t his. Enough of the horror. Enough of the voices inside his head that were never meant to take root…until a masked serial killer known as Calavera strikes a little too close to home.
Now, with Calavera on the loose, Barnes is ready to reconnect, risking his life—and his sanity. Because in the mind of this serial killer, there is one secret even Barnes has yet to see…

MOVIE - 3 Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

R (1:55)
Wide release 12/1/17 (But hard to find around here)
Viewed January 11, 2018
IMBd: 8.2
RT Critic:  92   Audience:  87
Critic's Consensus:  Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri deftly balances black comedy against searing drama -- and draws unforgettable performances from its veteran cast along the way.
Cag:  5.5 Incredible acting
Directed by Martin McDonagh (who also wrote it)
Fox Searchlight Pictures

Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, Peter Dinklage

My comments:  I snorted, I rolled my eyes, I got sad twinges in my stomach, I laughed, I was horrified, and I was constantly surprised.  Now that's a movie that takes you through efery emotion like you are on a short but sweet roller coaster ride.  I must admit the opening bars -- or even more than just the opening bars -- made me cringe.  It was opera; shrill, screechy opera.  My muscles were tense from the onset and I'm so glad that the rest of the music was totally acceptable after that bad start.  This was an amazing movie, with actors and actresses that have earned my standing ovation.  So many emotions, and they all rang true!  Definitely a winner.  There was one side story that was harder than I would've guessed at this pint in my life would be quite as difficult as it was, which brought back Steve' battle 17 years ago.  That was a little hard.

RT/ IMDb Summary:  THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI is a darkly comic drama from Academy Award winner Martin McDonagh (IN BRUGES). After months have passed without a culprit in her daughter's murder case, Mildred Hayes (Academy Award winner Frances McDormand) makes a bold move, painting three signs leading into her town with a controversial message directed at William Willoughby (Academy Award nominee Woody Harrelson), the town's revered chief of police. When his second-in-command Officer Dixon (Sam Rockwell), an immature mother's boy with a penchant for violence, gets involved, the battle between Mildred and Ebbing's law enforcement is only exacerbated.

6. The Homecoming by Alan Russell

listened on Audible
2017, Thomas & Mercer
332 pgs.
Adult CRF with a touch of scifi
Finished 1-11-18
Goodreads rating: 4.07 - 586 ratings
My rating: 3.5 or 4...the "can't put it down part" better push it to 4!

First line/s:  "Don't get too near the fire, Stella."

My comments:  So much food for thought!  There have to be other beings in space and close by, in reality how can that not be?  Reading this book makes you ask even more questions and think about it just a little bit more.

Goodreads synopsis: Seven years ago, young Stella Pierce vanished from the face of the earth. Now her grieving, broken family—along with Detective Orson Cheever, who never stopped working her case—is stunned by her mysterious return.
The now-teenage girl claims to have spent her missing years in the company of Travelers—extraterrestrial nomads—voyaging through space.
Despite her family’s effort to keep Stella’s incredible tale secret, the story becomes a national sensation. Most people want to discount her story, saying it’s the result of trauma; only Detective Cheever seems to want the same thing Stella does: the truth.
The enigmatic Stella finds herself in the eye of the storm while vying forces—some visible and some not—swirl around her. Is it her tale that is incredible, or is it Stella? As new questions surrounding the girl gain terrifying urgency, Cheever learns that there is nothing—and no one—he can trust.

Adult Murder Mystery/Police Procedural
Finished 1/9/18

Setting: Downeast "Berryville," Maine, 1980's?

First line/s:  "The beat-up old Jeep Wagoneer labored to climb the hill that led to what the locals called 'The Bog' in the small town of Berryville, Maine."

My comments:  I was quite excited to read of this murder mystery set in Downeast Maine, but it was riddled with problems.  I DID like the story, and although it was written in a choppy, weird manner, I didn't really mind that part.  It was different, almost set out like an outline but the real "writing" never happened.  There were so many things for me to dislike.  In no particular order:  I never got a sense of where Downeast this took place.  There were mentions of Machias, and driving to Augusta and Bangor.  Yes, the blueberry bogs, but nothing to give me a picture of the setting.  Disappointing.  There was nowhere near enough information about each of the "main" characters.  Pat and Marge were completely fascinating, and I would have read a book about just them.  But.....how old were they?  Other than their standard outfits, what did they look like?  They had no income and lived on poached meat, but how did they buy all the rifle shells, beer, and tobacco?  Very exasperating:  every character, when speaking to another (and there was a lot of dialogue) said the other person's name.  Every time.  Constantly.  Ugh! And now to Harry Circus himself.  That is a HORRIBLE surname for a protagonist.  HORRIBLE!  We actually know very little about him.  He is obsessed with keeping his wife, Annie, happy, and is overly lovey dovey with her.  Too much of that, yuck.  Unneeded.  How old are they? They were friends with the murdered banker?  How?  Were they close in age?  He loves to drive fast.  He has a bit of compassion in him, but is frequently unkind to others, especially his subordinates.  He drinks a lot of coffee, as does everyone we encounter in this book.

All in all, this book is a good outline for a better book.  A first attempt outline.  I'm surprised that it actually has been printed in book and Kindle format.  There's a second installment already available, Across the Singing Bridge.  I actually think I'm going to read it to see if Marge and Pat return.  It has no reviews on Goodreads.  None.  What am I in for?

Goodreads synopsis: E.D. Ward’s first novel in the Harry Circus mystery series is a story of unforgettable suspense from the dramatic opening to the bloody finish. In rural Down East Maine, a seasoned State Trooper, Harry Circus, is driven to solve the most gruesome murder he’s ever investigated. The body of Lester Sawyer, local banker and good friend of Harry’s, is found disemboweled and partially skinned on the remote blueberry barrens, north of the small town of Berryville.
Tension mounts as Harry, with the help of his counterpart, Constable Ralph Bailey, follows the scent of the murderer to the brutal end where he discovers the long-kept secret of a mother and daughter.  NOTE FROM MUDDY PUDDLE:  This last line is not at all correct!

4. Turtles All the Way Down by John Green

read on my iPhone
2017 Dutton Books for Young Readers
290 pgs.
YA/CRF
Finished 1/8/18
Goodreads rating: 4.14 - 66,158 ratings
My rating: 5
Setting: contemporary Indianapolis, IN

First line/s:  "I might be fictional, my weekdays were spent at a publicly funded institution on the north side of Indianapolis called White River High School, where I was required to eat lunch at a particular time -- between 12:37 p.m. and 1:14 p.m. -- by forces so much larger than myself that I couldn't even begin to identify them."

My comments:  What makes a book "good?"  What is it in a story that leaves you feeling that you just read something really special?  It doesn't happen very often, but when it does, you know it, you feel it.You overlook some of the little things that don't work  for you.   Turtles All the Way Down taught me many lessons.  As hard as I try to empathize with people with mental illnesses, I have to admit that those are some of the many, many times in my life that I'm uncomfortable.  It's books like this one that give you unprecedented insight into what goes on in a mind that's slightly awry.  And Aza's mind is more than a little slightly awry.  This was an incredibly powerful book for me.  Great storytelling.  Great character building.  Great relationships, particularly Aza and Daisy's relationship, best friends forever (as dumb as that may sound) and Aza and her mom's relationship, which makes me look back upon my relationship with my mom, and with my kids.  And I'm so impressed that John Green can write the character of a female protagonist  with such assurance. fI was impressed, inspired, and completely saddened by this work of art.

Goodreads synopsis: #1 bestselling author John Green returns with his first new novel since The Fault in Our Stars!
Sixteen-year-old Aza never intended to pursue the mystery of fugitive billionaire Russell Pickett, but there’s a hundred-thousand-dollar reward at stake and her Best and Most Fearless Friend, Daisy, is eager to investigate. So together, they navigate the short distance and broad divides that separate them from Russell Pickett’s son, Davis.
Aza is trying. She is trying to be a good daughter, a good friend, a good student, and maybe even a good detective, while also living within the ever-tightening spiral of her own thoughts.
In his long-awaited return, John Green, the acclaimed, award-winning author of Looking for Alaska and The Fault in Our Stars, shares Aza’s story with shattering, unflinching clarity in this brilliant novel of love, resilience, and the power of lifelong friendship.

2017 G. P. Putnam Sons
368 pgs.
YA Fantasy
Finished 1/7/18
Goodreads rating: 4.23 - 18,711 ratings
My rating: 3
Setting: NYC and Tokyo in the somewhat-foreseeable future

First line/s:  "It's too damn cold of a day to be out on a hunt."

My comments: Well.  Many people have compared this to Ready Player One, but that is definitely not a comparison I'd use.  I liked Ready Player One lots more, and I rated it 3.5.  So why am I left feeling flat?  I very much like the protagonist: super smart, thoughtful, cute and tiny.  Sure of herself.  We discover that she's an incredible hacker, but other than something she herself seems surprised to have done, it's very hard to believe from the little she reveals about how she got where she is.  Little stories, but not enough for me to be a believer.  And there are very few surprises.  I had guessed early on who the mysterious "bad guy" was.  I was also able to surmise who the one bounty hunter who was revealed was.  And this was one of those audio readers that I didn't enjoy.  She stressed different words in a sentence than I would have stressed if reading it myself.  I didn't like the accents she gave people, or the femininity of her voice for all the characters.  It just didn't really work for me.  Perhaps if I'd read it instead of listening to it?  Might take my rating up a half point....

Goodreads synopsis: For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isn’t just a game—it’s a way of life. The obsession started ten years ago and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. Needing to make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships—only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.
Convinced she’s going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game’s creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year’s tournament in order to uncover a security problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika’s whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she’s only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.

MOVIE - Molly's Game

R (2:10)
Wide release 1/5/18
Viewed Saturday, January 6, 2018 at AMC Camp Hill
IMBd:
RT Critic: 82   Audience:  88
Critic's Consensus:  Powered by an intriguing story and a pair of outstanding performances from Jessica Chastain and Idris Elba, Molly's Game marks a solid debut for writer-director Aaron Sorkin.
Cag: 5/Loved it
Directed by Aaron Sorkin
STXfilms
Based on the book by Molly Bloom

Jessica Chastain, Idris Elba, Kevin Costner

My comments:  So many reasons why I loved this movie.  It was SMART.  Smart people, smart dialogue.  It was looooooong, but moved quickly.  Jessica Chastain was superb. It's a true story, based on Molly Bloom's book.  It flashes back and forth effortlessly, without getting confusing at all.  Fantastic storytelling.  Just fantastic.  We need more like this!

RT/ IMDb Summary:  MOLLY'S GAME is based on the true story of Molly Bloom, an Olympic-class skier who ran the world's most exclusive high-stakes poker game for a decade before being arrested in the middle of the night by 17 FBI agents wielding automatic weapons. Her players included Hollywood royalty, sports stars, business titans and finally, unbeknownst to her, the Russian mob. Her only ally was her criminal defense lawyer Charlie Jaffey, who learned that there was much more to Molly than the tabloids led us to believe.

Cool Covers

There have been so many times I'm drawn to a book because of its cover, but I can never remember them all.  How easy it is to add this page to help me remember and enjoy!

2. Amina's Voice by Hena Khan

read on my iPhone
copyright info
197 pgs.
Middle Grade CRF, Cultural information
Finished 1/5/18
Goodreads rating: 4.06 - 2133 ratings
My rating:  3
Setting:  contemporary Milwaukee, WI

First line/s:  "Something sharp pokes me in the rib.  "You should really sign up for a solo," Soojin whispers from the seat behind me in music class.

My comments:  This was a quiet, lovely book about a very sweet girl and her family.  I loved all the Pakistani-American information, as well as all the went along with Amina's best friend, Soojin's, citizenship. I'm not even sure why I'm not jumping up and down about it.  There were no surprises, everything worked out well, and there were a lot of stereotypical situations (bullying, jealousy, sibling relationships) .  It wasn't a deep book, it scratched the surface, and will be a nice read for many middle grade girls.

Goodreads synopsis: Amina has never been comfortable in the spotlight. She is happy just hanging out with her best friend, Soojin. Except now that she’s in middle school everything feels different. Soojin is suddenly hanging out with Emily, one of the “cool” girls in the class, and even talking about changing her name to something more “American.” Does Amina need to start changing too? Or hiding who she is to fit in? While Amina grapples with these questions, she is devastated when her local mosque is vandalized.
