My comments:    Pulled me in fast, at first reminded me of another book, especially the setting, but couldn't place it.  Good story, but that the protagonist stayed in this big old "Cliff House" even when she knew someone was sneaking in at night to terrorize her didn't seem very prudent...actually felt stupid.  It just didn't seem like something a real person would do.  Wrapped up very neatly at the end.  Would happily read another by this author.

My comments: I'm so glad I read this.  No cell phones, no computers, the encyclopedia at the library dates from 1902. In my head it was the 70s.  Many facets of the story....losing your dad, moving with your mom from Vermont to a Maine island - an island only accessible by ferry - saving an osprey baby and raising it, Townies vs Summer kids, making friends, fishing and horse riding, learning to sail and exploring.  And painting. So good.

My comments: Modern-day witches, with interesting back and forths with four generations of mother/daughters, aunt/nieces.  I listened so I didn't have the family tree right in front of me, but it was pretty easy to remember each generation.  So much related to current political tensions, particularly patriarchal billionaires.  I was disappointed with the ending, though.

My comments: We are left on a MAJOR cliff-hanger, which was cruelly disappointing (not knowing ahead of time), but other than that I couldn't put this book down.  I love Walter Nash....brilliant, level-headed, personable (and wealthy) family man.  But then his estranged father dies, and from the funeral on the shit hits the fan for him.  Narrators were wonderful, especially the one who read Walter Nash.  Loved, loved, loved the story and can't wait to see how it ends...in April!

My comments: I loved listening to this, Mira Sorvino does a wonderful job and kept me listening even when I thought it was getting a little too long.  Jess tells her entire story, and in doing so keeps going back in her memories to conversations and moments in time with her family.  This technique worked really well for me, and I feel I got to know Jess - and her tight, eccentric Italian-American New Jersey shore family very well.  The second half of the story is set in Tuscany, Italy, which I didn't really like as well as the first part, though both told the story of an Italian family with strong, firm roots in Italy.

My comments: This was a good mystery, and at one point I was definitely wondering if Lee was an untrustworthy narrator because some of her reasoning didn't seem...well...reasonable.  This story definitely proves that some people are not at all what they seem.  I was left a bit upset that there was no resolution about why she was abandoned and how, that was the biggest mystery for me.  Stories that include insider's looks at a cult always interest me.

My comments: Took forever to read, but was ultimately an excellent story.  Told in two voices: Bailey Rae's in 2025 and Winnie's years previously in the late 70s, we learn the backstory and the current story of a 25-year-old who has lost her "adoptive" mother...Winnie.  Abusive marriages, abused children, and found families versus blood families are the huge themes in the story.

My comments: I love it when you wait and wait for an audio book to arrive from your library waiting list and the moment you start it you know you've found a winner!  This was a winner.  Even with the heaviest of heavy themes: grief - the light touches, humor, character development and great writing helped it stay more-or-less light-hearted all the way to the end.  You always knew what was coming, but the surprises about how were super-delightful.

My comments: At the moment, not really sure how I feel about this story.  It was tragic from beginning to end.  It was beautifully written, a tangle of facts that were given to the reader in a wonderful way.  It was slowly paced, though a little to slow in places.  But the pictures it drew in my mind!   Quite something.  And how do you frate a story that pisses you off and entertains you at the same time?  Very difficult.

My comments: Oh my, what a story.  It was fairly slow-paced, which for once didn't really bother me, and I guess I'd consider it a realistic dark fairy tale.  Someone called it haunting.  Oh yes.  And tragic.  Sad.  Mesmerizing.  Long-winded in places....and touching. Told in three voices:  Birdie, the mother; Amaleen, her daughter; and Arthur's father.  Most of the story focuses around Arthur.  And although I wasn't too fond of listening to the endless ramblings of six-year-old Amaleen, I realized by the end how important her voice is to the story.

My comments: 4.5  This is a just-plain-feel-good book.  You KNOW that all the bad stuff that happens will end up okay, and there's so much humor, even in the serious places, that you're chuckling the whole way through.  You have to let go of some of the feelings of disbelief (would this really ever happen?) as well as a little of the protagonist's SEL ramblings (which are explained really nicely by the author in the afterword of the book).  I loved Frank Bailey, 170-pound Great Dane extraordinaire, which is saying a lot because I'd never be considered a "dog person."

My comments: A new character and a new setting for Michael Connelly!  "Stil" is a detective on Catalina Island, which looks like its main offices are in Long Beach (not LA).  He's been sent there for unwarranted reasons, all the cops they want to "get rid of" are sent there.  He's got a girlfriend and has come to very much like living and working on the island.  Then all sorts of you-know-what hits the fan.  Robberies, beheadings of protected wildlife, murder....and more.  A HUGE variety of partially related problems that keep him on his toes.  He's smart and he's good at what he does, although he's pretty abrasive.  I'm not sure if I 100% like him, so I'm looking forward (already!) to the next in the series so I can form a better opinion.

My comments: If I rated this book on how I felt about some of the characters and the situations they created, my rating would be much lower. Oh how I gritted my teeth in places!  Thinking this book would be a light romantic comedy, I discovered I was quite mistaken. There were so many layers in this well-written novel that I loved it more and more as the author divulged new information.  I particularly enjoyed the glimpses of both New York City and of India.  I could see it all through Mira's eyes. Characterization, plot, setting - superbly created.  Highly recommend.

My comments: 4.5  An excellent first-in-a-series about a police detective in Bend, Oregon, which mainly centers around her own personal mystery, the murder of her politician-husband.  Told back and forth during three time periods, it's an attention-grabbing story to be sure!  Just what I needed

My comments: So many obstacles to overcome, but good ole Walt stays calm and figures out how to outsmart the bad guys over and over again.

My comments: Not really a Rom"COM" (there's some funny parts, but much of this book is pretty darned serious).  Samantha & Xavier fall hard for each other, but she lives in LA caring for her mother with dementia and he owns and runs a veterinary clinic in Minnesota.
