My comments:  Told in abcb quatrains, this adorable picture book introduces all sorts of mythical and fantastical creatures (unicorn, hippogriff, sasquatch, gryphon, kraken, dragon, jackalope, phoenix, manticore, harpies, chupacabra, fairies, kelpies, basilisk, mermaid, sprites, chimera...)  in a simple and fun way.  A great extension for older kids:  make a glossary or afterword for the book using others as models.

Goodreads:  Sam just got a hamster for a pet. She's not really impressed. The hamster isn't very exciting--he mostly eats and sleeps and gets his shavings wet. BORING!
     After reading a book about mythological creatures, Sam gets some ideas for more exciting pets. But she soon realizes that taking care of these magical beasts might not be as wonderful as she though. Unicorns are shy, gryphons scare the dogs at the dog park and having a fire extinguisher handy at all times makes dragons seem like an awful lot of work. 
     Maybe the hamster really is the best pet for her. A nice, safe pet... right?

458.  Hong Kong Street Signs

Hi Chris!  My name is Tiffany from Hong Kong!  Have you been to Hong Kong?  I just randomly found a postcard with street signs, hope you don't mind :p  These signs are located in Central, a busy district in Hong Kong, with a Soho area and lots of commercial buildings.  The first sign wrote "Lan Kwai Fong," which is a well-known Soho area with lots of bars and nightclubs.  You can go there when you come to visit to experience the night life of Hong Kong!

My comments:  This was a wonderful movie, correctly rated by Rotten Tomatoes and all the other reviews I've read. Set in "the bush" of New Zealand, it tells the story of how power put in the wrong hands can go dreadfully awry and that you definitely cannot judge a book by its cover.  When a 13 year old overweight boy is fostered by a loving woman and her grumpy husband way in the middle-of=nowhere-New Zealand, an instant bond forms between the boy and the woman (she has the boy call her "auntie").  Then, in order to set in motion the craziness that follows, tragedy has to strike.  The rest of the film is about how "uncle" (Sam &&&&) and &&&&&& take off into the bush to avoid the law, while bonding and hunting and figuring out how to stay alive.  So much humor and well-meaning in this excellent film!  You always know that the outcome is going to be a good one, too!

RT Summary:  Raised on hip-hop and foster care, defiant city kid Ricky gets a fresh start in the New Zealand countryside. He quickly finds himself at home with his new foster family: the loving Aunt Bella, the cantankerous Uncle Hec, and dog Tupac. When a tragedy strikes that threatens to ship Ricky to another home, both he and Hec go on the run in the bush. As a national manhunt ensues, the newly branded outlaws must face their options: go out in a blaze of glory or overcome their differences and survive as a family. My comments:  I've read at least 50 books since I read this one, and I had forgotten to write a review when I finished it, but here's what I remember.  I remember a lot, which I usually don't after this much time has gone by (it's now April, '17).  I listened to this in the car riding around PA with Ella last summer.  She loved it.  I liked most of it.  I was disconcerted by the amount of things the kids actually got away with without letting their parents know.  Sneakiness bothers me, but what they did was for their own good reasons, it worked out, and was actually quite clever.  I liked the relationship between the two protagonists, and I ached for the family in this unending time of grief.  The interaction with the acting theater festival participants was out-of-the-ordinary for a children's book and quite well done, as was the somewhat-flimsy but perfect-for-kids mystery.

I'm Tomomi and live near Tokyo.  I send you the Gotochi of KOCHI.  This river is "Shimanto River" and a bridge is "chinka-bashi," a bridge designed to be underwater during a flood.  Shimanto River is called the last clear stream in Japan, 196 km long and have many bridges like this.  It is popular for tourists.  I like the season of fresh green.  It gives me power to live.  I like to travel and go to climb the mountain.  I hope to go out freely and safely again soon.  Gest wishes and stay safe.

It rained all day.  We ate a bagel & yogurt continental breakfast at the Econo Lodge in Manchester before we took off for the day, Didn't get to eat again until dinner.

Boscawen, NH - Bittersweet Fabric Shop

     Very cute cabin set back a bit, their RowByRow was a beautiful "Home In New Hampshire" which came all cut AND prepped with iron-on fusing!  Love it!  They didn't have any new license plates for this year, and I didn't like their plate for last year, so I passed on it.

Henniker, NH - Quilted Threads

     FANTASTIC Fabric shop, one of the best I've seen in awhile.  A little bit of everything and VERY up-to-date with contemporary, cutting edge fabrics, styles, and patterns - including clothing and woolies.  Purchased a super-cool advent calendar pattern with pieced daily 4" paper-pieced pictures for each of the 25 days.  Row by Row Plate:  GO NUTS 4 BOLTS

Hillsborough, NH - Franklin Pierce (14th US President) Homestead

     Dede took the tour in the house, while I watched the DVD about the area and Pierce's childhood in the area.  Beautiful place, so glad we stopped.

Wilmington, VT - The Vermont Bowl Company

      Years ago, when I worked at the Kimball Shop in NEH, we sold gorgeous wooden salad bowls made by John McLeod.  So as I was cruising along through Vermont and saw the sign, we stopped. Gorgeous, gorgeous bowls.  Drool-worthy bowls.  

Bennington, VT - The Scarlett Creation

     Small quilt shop that had yarn, too.  It was pouring cats & dogs when we got there, and I had to take off my shoes, roll up my pants, and wade through calf-deep raging water to get out of the car and inside (fun!)  I bought the first fabric for Charlie's quilt here, small pink hearts in a haphazard pattern on white.  RowByRow plate:  GOT QUILTS

     I remember coming here with Steve years ago, and it was fun to bring Dede here. Such beautiful pottery!

Dinner:  Bennington Pizza Plaza - Delicious pizza, spaghetti, and salad.  Inexpensive.  Huge drawback: Dede left a bag with most of her pattern purchases and when we went back an hour later, they were not there.  Someone must have taken (stolen!) her bag.  I can't imagine that happening, especially in Vermont....

Autumn Motel, Bennington - run by a 3-generation Indian family, who were very nice.

Beautiful, sunny day.  Breakfast at little sports bar/cafe on Main Street in Cooperstown.

National Baseball Hall of Fame.  Awesome.  Well worth a bit of an out-of-the-way drive.  It's beside Ostego Lake, which is lovely.

Lakeview Cemetery - a really old one that, unlike yesterdays in Bennington, has not been cared for very well.  It's huge and built on a very high hill.  Steps are built into the hill at various points.  I found a letter box there, and although there were others, we enjoyed our ride through the cemetery and then hit the road.

Utica, New York -Tiger Lily Quilt Shop - another favorite!  We spent a couple of hours there.  I was so overwhelmed, I didn't purchase any of the Christmas fabrics that I was looking at for my Advent calendar.  Lu, the manager, was a hoot.  We discovered it's less than 5 hrs from Mt. Holly Springs, so I'm going to come up and take a class.

Brockport, NY - Country Treasures (a gift shop and quilt shop with a totally country theme).

Brockport, NY - Lunch at Jimmy Z's Texas Hots, where I enjoyed a unique lunch:  a layered basket of macaroni salad, french fries, and tater tots topped with a cheese burger, fried chicken strip, mozzarella cheese and gravy.  YUM!

Lockport, NY - A ride down the Erie Canal through a set of double locks.  Cool!

Niagara Falls - drove around a bit, getting acclimated.  Went into an information center/gift shop where we purchased a "tour" for tomorrow that included a night at the Sheraton at Niagara Falls  for $139.  Couldn't pass it up!

Dinner at Rainforest Cafe - a Chinese chicken salad that was light and yummy and perfect.
