Books About Trees - Trees - Trees

I love trees, the green of them, the smell of them, the sight of them. It seems strange that I've moved to a place that does not boast a dearth of trees. I have a beautiful huge palo verde in my yard, and have planted one each of lemon, grapefruit, and orange. I have a huge saguaro and another good sized saguaro, but they don't really count as trees.

Near the end of January each year, there is a minor Jewish holiday called TuBishvat. It marks the Jewish New Year for trees. My fourth grade partner and I have a poetry night on TuBishvat, so I've decided to gather together a list of great books for my fourth graders.

Picture Books:

Bring Me Some Apples and I'll Make You a Pie, 2009 (Gourley) The story of chef Edna Lewis includes growing and harvesting fruit and nut trees on the family farm.

Redwoods, 2009 (Chin) Clever fictional story that includes oodles of information about the Redwood forest. One of my favorite books of 2009.

This Tree Counts, 2010 (Formento/Snow) info about OAK trees and planting trees.

Wangari's Trees of Peace, 2008 (Winter) Chronicles the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize winner who taught the women of Kenya to reforest their country. This is the first one I read, by one of my very favorite illustrators.

We Planted a Tree, 2010 (Muldrow/Staake) Shows trees growing all over the world. Illustrations are cartoon-like and fun.

Who Will Plant a Tree? 2010 (Palotta/Leonard) particularly discusses germination, wonderful illustrations.

Winter Trees, 2008 (Gerber/Evans) New England trees in winter, rhyming text, linoleum block , collage, and water color illustrations.
